AppliqNiques

Appliqué’ is so much fun.

You will need to decide what you want to appliqué’ your doodle onto.

I like to do them on wool backgrounds & frame them in a prim big grubby frame.

You can stitch them onto a homespun towel;

you can take a plain sweatshirt or denim shirt/jacket

& cut the bottom of the shirt straight across,

fold under & blanket stitch around all the edges.

(cuffs, bottom collar & pockets too),

put the appliqué’ anywhere you wish on the shirt,

& don’t forget to embellish the backs too.

Appliqué’ onto a pillow, or shrink them down

and make tiny tiny appliqué’ ornaments

or frame them small. The ideas are endless.

**************************************************

Before you begin with your needle, you haveta get a few things ready;

Pattern Pieces: get a piece of paper & lay over top your Twigs Doodled Design.

Trace around everything on the doodle make each item separate:

ex: doll holding crow, trace around crow, then trace doll head, then trace doll dress, etc.

These become your different color pattern pieces.

Once you get each pattern piece traced out it will be ready for cutting.

Felting Wool

**************************************************

I love using wool & Wool-felt for my designs,

When using wool felt I have found it easier to coffee stain

& felt your wool at the same time.

I mix hot water with instant coffee in my sink,

soak wool felt/wool

(Do not mix colors they do tend to bleed,

add some vinegar to help with the bleeding).

The more coffee you use the more prim & darker your project will be.

Let your wool drip dry in the sun.

you can tumble on low in dryer for about 10 min to felt it.

**************************************************

You will need to take your dry felt and iron it if you want it to lay flat.

cut pattern out of wool & place together how doodle shows.

I use glue sticks on the back of my wool & then press it

with an iron to make it stick to my background.

If you are appliquéing on clothing to be washed

you will need to use heat n bond.

I usually heat n bond my fabric first then cut the pattern out.

Peal off the bond paper, place pattern pieces on clothing,

heat with iron then stitch.

**************************************************

Now you are ready to stitch your doodle together.

You can either hand stitch which is what I prefer or

you can do it with machine with a zigzag stitch.

I like the look of pearl cotton for my stitching.

If you don’t have pearl cotton regular DMC thread will work just fine.

Pearl Cotton size 8 is what I like best.

Tip: for center of flowers, pip berries on vines & tiny circles

I use a HOLE PUNCH. It punches right through the wool and makes perfect circles.

They now come in various sizes too.

Note: Special thanks to Lynn Ann Davis
